MIT Nightlife, Part II

MIT Nightlife, Part II Email lists can be the burden of my existence sometimes. I get all kinds of spam- the actual kind, telling me I need a degree from some on-line university (.hello, why would you send that to an at mit dot edu email address?), announcements from every group on campus promoting their events/shows/fundraisers, as well as all kinds of junk from fellow students who want to share their amusing weblink of the day with all their friends. Sometimes, it actually pays off. In todays Doonesbury column, Alex comments on the Stata Center. I personally appreciated the strip, considering Im in the camp of people who thinks that Stata is the most hideous excuse for a building Ive ever seen. And Ruth 07 agrees with me. Speaking of Ruth 07, this is what she and I looked like as we headed off to the annual Burton Third Anything But Clothes party: So hot, right? If anything looks familiar, I kind of recycled what I wore last year. After I posted that, my entire extended family (all of whom read this blog) found it hilarious. Every once in awhile when Im home for a break I run into another person who I havent seen in 2 years and theyre always like OMG I saw that picture of you wearing duct tape and it was so clever!!! The downside of being an admissions blogger- you can never escpae your past. I figure my reputation is already ruined for life, so whats the harm if I continue to post pictures of me wearing duct tape clothing? Anyway, Ruths outfit rocked pretty hard if I do say so myself. Side note about computing at MIT (which will be relevant in like 5 seconds, promise): Our campus-wide computing environment is called Athena. Everytime you print something to an Athena printer, it prints out a header page with your username on it so you can quickly and easily find your stuff in the big messy pile of the entire worlds computer printouts. This is obviously useful but very wasteful, so each header page has something useful printed on it in hopes that youll reuse it- like musical staffs or graph paper. Most people leave their header pages in a recycling box in the cluster, so Ruth raided one of these and constructed her outfit entirely out of Athena headers and packing tape, which adds several hardk0reness points to the project, in my opinion. As for me, I had no time to make anything last week, so I brought the colored duct tape my parents bought me to commemorate the original duct tape outfit to Ruths room, where she went all Project Runway on me and helped me design my new and improved duct tape clothing. (If the modifications dont look that cool, thats because Ruth had all these ambitious ideas that I knew I wouldnt be able to actually pull off) Thats me, doing the Vanna White move to point out my hometown on the map. Becausethats what the person holding the camera told me to do. *shrug* In other news, someone on my floor forwarded an email he got offering free dating service to MIT students. I followed the link and made this discovery (written by a Harvard undergrad), which I think is awesome and she be required reading for all male MIT students: Intelligent Turn-ons =P Coming soon- answers to all your questions. Promise. (I say that a lot, dont I?) Post Tagged #Burton-Conner House

OSAT And OGET Study Guides

posted on January 5, 2010 Pam Raby of Oklahoma emailed me this question about the Oklahoma General Eduation test and the Oklahoma Subject Area Tests: Hello, I am studying for my OGET and OSAT.   I was wondering if you bought the OGET or OSAT study guide book?   My OSAT will be in Business Education.   I pulled the study guide offline, but I just don’t know how accurate it is to the test.   Any info provided would be great!   Thanks for your time and you blog! Hi Pam! Thank you very much for writing me. Per our emails, I wanted to share our email conversation on this site so that others with the same question can benefit from our experiences. To answer Pam’s question: I did not buy the study guide — just downloaded the free PDF from the CEOE website  (link updated 1/6/2016). I am not fond of math, so in preparing for the OGET, I spent my time learning a bit of algebra and how to use the formulas provided in the study guide. (For the record, those formulas are included on the test.) The books I used to prepare are: Personally, I found the Practical Math book to be the most useful, both personally and in respect to taking the test. I also took the OSAT English. All I did to prepare for it was review the study guide and brush up a bit on my grammar and English literature history. If you majored in English though, and are halfway decent at taking a test, you should be fine. Pam says that she plans to take the OSAT Business Education test on Jan. 30. (That’s the same day I’m taking the OSAT Journalism!) She asked if I’d recommend purchasing the â€Å"OSAT Business Education (040) Secrets Study Guide.† After reviewing the study guide at Amazon (you can just do a search for that title), I would only recommend it if you don’t understand the psychology behind multiple choice and essay exams. Back in high school, I took a couple of seminars on the ACT and/or PSAT/SAT, which explained how to understand what the exam writers are looking for by what they ask in the questi on (how it’s phrased, what answers are given, etc.) That information has helped me immensely, in my opinion, in taking the OGET/OSATs. So, if you’ve taken any of these seminars or read similar books, then I suggest that you stick with the free CEOE study guides. If you haven’t taken any of the major test seminars or read the books that explain how these tests are written and what the examiners are looking for, then the Secrets study guide may be worth it. Pam, if you decide to buy the guide, I’d love to read your review of it. Thank you! Michelle WatersI am a secondary English Language Arts teacher, a University of Oklahoma student working on my Master’s of Education in Instructional Leadership and Academic Curriculum with an concentration in English Education, and a NBPTS candidate. I am constantly seeking ways to amplify my students’ voices and choices.

Heart Of Darkness By Joseph Conrad - 1251 Words

The novella ‘Heart of Darkness’ by Joseph Conrad, published in 1899 is considered to be one of the most influential texts of its time. Although on the surface it seems as though Conrad is praising the white people, with further analysis it is seen that he is being ironic, and is in fact criticising the way they try to civilise the people who do not want to be civilised. English Professor Mark Dintenfass describes Heart of Darkness as: â€Å"You can see Heart of Darkness as a depiction of, and an attack upon, colonialism in general, and, more specifically, the particular brutal form colonialism took in the Belgian Congo.† Throughout the text Conrad uses both the narration of the main character Marlow, characterisation and irony to criticise the†¦show more content†¦Colonisation is defined by the Merriam-Webster dictionary as: ‘to take control of (an area) and send people to live there.’ Marlow now understands that the white Europeans are doing what they think is right, but do not think of the people they are doing it to. He realises that that the strength and superiority that the white Europeans have is purely based on the way they treat the natives as being weaker than them. Marlow is also showing the reader that what the Europeans call ‘colonisation’ is truly just robbery and murder. They are taking the resources from the native’s country and are not giving them anything worthy back. They are essentially robbing them and using violence and brutal force to do it. They treat the natives as slaves and torture and kill them if they do not to the ‘right’ thing. This is how they get their respect, and this is how they show them that they are superior to them. They use force to try and appear better than the natives. Marlow realises this and during his narration of the novel he criticises the society and the colonisation that was happening. Conrad uses Marlow to show the reader his negative r elationship with the society of that time. It is shown that he thinks the colonisation of the natives is morally wrong and is just murder and robbery with pride attached to it. Using Marlow made it easier for Conrad to show the
